The Nigeria Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is an independent body set up in 1973 by the Nigerian government to promote national unity in the country.

Ever since its establishment, all full-time graduates from various institutions are required to serve the nation for one year.

However, there are few exceptions to those who can serve and they include the disabled, part-time graduates, and those above the age of thirty, 30 at the time of their graduation.

The latter category of people is given a certificate of exemption in place of the NYSC certificate.

It’s also pertinent to note that to be eligible for registration of Nigeria Youth Service Corps, you must have fulfilled the guidelines given by this body and its collaborating bodies.

What are these guidelines? And what are the collaborating bodies working with NYSC?.

Many don’t know that NYSC works hand in hand with certain bodies to regulate the proper mobilization and registration of graduates.

These bodies include Nigeria University Commission (NUC), National Board For Technical Education (NBTE), and the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).

NUC oversees the list of names forwarded for Participation in the NYSC exercise by universities and other degree-awarding institutions while the NBTE also scrutinizes those of graduates from polytechnics and monotechnics.

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board is not also left out as names of graduates given for consideration if not found on JAMB’s Portal for regularization will be rejected.

All these bodies along with the Nigeria Youth Service Corps then review graduates eligible for registration and mobilization.

Now to the nitty-gritty of this subject matter, if you fulfilled the above requirements congratulations to you. Here is an explanation of how to register.

It’s worthy to note that registration comes in Batches and Streams so you are expected to keep up with the latest updates from time to time so as not to miss the opportunity.

The information I’m about to share is the direct guidelines given by the management of Nigeria Youth Service Corps for everyone eligible for registration.

Lastly, let’s look at some frequently asked questions by prospective corps members and what the answers are. We never can say you might also want answers to these questions someday.

Frequently Asked Questions On NYSC

WHY IS IT OBLIGATORY THAT CORPS MEMBERS PAY FOR CALL UP LETTERS?

Paying to process call-up letters online is optional. It is not compulsory. NYSC made it optional because of the realization that not every corps member will need or can afford it.

As said above, picking up call-up letters from schools has always been and remains the responsibility of prospective corps members.

NYSC Portal Login Dashboard

There are associated costs and risks to this, which vary for individuals. The situation of ‘Prospective Corps Member A’ who lives in Lagos and has graduated from a school in Lagos is different from that of ‘Prospective Corps Member B’ who lives in Lagos but has graduated from a higher institution in Port Harcourt or Zaria or Bauchi.

The costs and risks involved in going to the schools to pick call-up letters are different for the two candidates. NYSC thinks it will be unfair to ask both of them to pay or force them to embrace the initiative.

Apart from giving people the freedom to choose what suits them, the initiative is deliberately made optional to ensure fairness to all parties.

WHY DO CORPS MEMBERS PAY UP TO N2,786.24 FOR CALL UP LETTERS?

The N2,786.24 is not just for printing call-up letters. It is for the entire package of online registration, which requires the deployment of IT hardware and software and personnel to orientation camps all over the country but which also gives those who subscribe to it the advantage of processing their registration online, saving time during the registration at the orientation camps and allowing them to use their thumbprints to identify themselves in case they lose or are dispossessed of their call-up letters.

In the past, corps members who lose or are dispossessed of their call-up letters had to go through a cumbersome process of swearing affidavits, getting validation from their schools which takes time and may force them to enlist on another batch.

With online registration, those who are unfortunate to lose their letters can identify themselves with their fingerprints. So the N2,786.24 fee is for the entire process and package of benefits.
